Talk to Your Kids About Voting

It’s the week of the big election. In just a few days we will find out who will lead our country for the next four years. The fate of our country is in our hands. Have you talked to your children about the importance of exercising your right to vote? For most of us it will be many years before our children are old enough to vote, but if you start talking to them about it now, they may begin to realize the importance of it. I have been amazed at the things children are hearing about the election right … Continue reading

Why Supreme Court Judges Won’t Recuse Themselves

In March of 2012, the Supreme Court will hear oral arguments regarding the health reform law. Since the dates for this case were announced, there have been people pushing for two of the Supreme Court judges to recuse themselves from this case. It is unlikely that any of the judges will self-recuse. The Supreme Court is going to hear an extremely important case this year. There will be a total of five and a half hours of oral arguments regarding the Affordable Care Act and the individual mandate. Those hours will split up into three days. On March 26, 2012, … Continue reading

Can Your Realistically Fire Your Insurance Company?

Mitt Romney recently gave a speech where he talked about health insurance. In part of that speech, he said something that sounded as though he enjoyed firing people. He was talking about firing one’s health insurance company. Politicians should be extremely careful about the words they choose to say during an election year. Specific phrases, when taken out of context, can be used by a person’s opponents to make him or her look bad. I don’t think anyone would be surprised to learn that this sort of thing happens, or that it is a tactic that has been frequently used … Continue reading

Young Scrappers

The other day I saw the most incredible scrapbook layout. It was a birthday-themed design complete with real confetti, photos, die cuts, rub ons, stamps, stickers a deflated balloon, a journaling block, some leftover streamers, brads and eyelets. Oh, and it was made by a 10-year-old. Oh yes it was. I suppose I should not be surprsied, these days it is not unusual to see scrapbook classes and workshops offered to kids as young as five years old. My neighbor’s daughter is in junior high and she’s been scrapping since she was eight. She’s incredibly gifted and creates layouts that … Continue reading

One of the Best Things You Can Do

Another thing to talk about and one of the best things you can do for your marriage is study the bible together. As a start, I suggest getting a concordance and looking up husbands, wives and marriage and finding out what God has to say on these subjects. It will give you a clear picture of the way marriage should be. But don’t stop here. Make it a regular habit to study the bible and pray together. Meet with other married couples who are studying the same passages of scripture you are. It’s a great way of building enduring friendships, … Continue reading

A Baby Will Affect Your Marriage

A baby will affect your marriage. Married life changes after children arrive purely because of the amount of time a baby takes up and needs. However the new mother needs to be very careful at this time that her husband does not feel excluded and pushed to the periphery. Try and involve your husband as much as possible holding the baby, helping with feeding if bottle fed. If baby is breast fed then you will have to find other ways to involve your spouse. Let him read to them. Yes, I did say read. I‘m a great believer that children … Continue reading

For Dads: Bonding with Your Child

Growing up I always heard countless stories about how enthusiastic my dad was about having us two girls. There are tons of pictures in our family albums that show him holding us with a huge smile on his face. I can’t remember the things we did together during those first few years, but there are a whole lot of photos to prove we had a really good time. I saw these photos growing up and they made a lasting impact on me. To this day, I can look at one of those pictures and I am reminded of how much … Continue reading

Why Are Children Disobedient?

Many parents and teachers will tell you that children these days are disobedient. Why is that so? Because they are learning it from us. Too often we know exactly what we should do in a situation and yet we don’t do it. Even as I wrote those words, God convicted me. I knew I was guilty of doing exactly that. Yesterday I thought about calling someone to see how they were but didn’t because I wanted to do all the things I had to do, so I could finish reading the latest Jodi Picoult book. So this time when I … Continue reading

How Would He Have Voted During the Suffrage Movement?

The weekend before last Wayne and I headed to our local polling place to capitalize on the early voting system the city’s got set up. It’s nice. We enjoyed short lines, which spared us from the muss and fuss that’s sure to plague the polls next Tuesday. I got to thinking how remarkable that was. Not so much about the convenience of early voting (which is pretty nice), but about voting period. It’s hard for me to fathom that it hasn’t even been 100 years that women have had the right to vote. Grandma Wasn’t a Suffragette Whenever I think … Continue reading
