Welcome to the Politics Blog!

Welcome to the new Politics blog here at Families.com. Last week, the New Hampshire primaries demonstrated an upset in the presidential nominees. What’s great about the upcoming election is that it’s not about who is the front runner – because New Hampshire demonstrated that the front runner is not easily picked on either side of the aisle whether you’re looking at the Democratic party with Senator Barack Obama (our first potential black nominee), Senator Hilary Rodham Clinton (former First Lady and first potential female nominee) and Senator John Edwards (former nominee for Vice President). On Republican half of the ticket … Continue reading

Politics 101: Introduction and My Goal

“Okay kids, who can tell me whose running for President?” I asked my study group at the inner city tutoring center where I volunteer. “Someone named GOP!” “No, you’re dumb. . .it’s some black guy. We’re going to vote for him because he’s black.” The comments went on for another 5 minutes as to why you should vote for a woman instead of an African American or whether or not the old guy named “GOP” was an animal rights activist because one of the kids keeps seeing his picture with an elephant next to it. If these were little kids, … Continue reading

Utah Bill Would Require Coverage for Autism Treatment

Utah is one of the states that does not require private health insurance companies to cover the cost of treatment for autism. That could change, thanks to a new bill that would require private health plans to cover it. This is in response to pilot programs that failed to provide adequate coverage. Right now, there are 32 states that require all health insurance plans to cover the cost of autism treatment. Typically, this means that the insurance plan will cover applied behavioral analysis, (ABA). It is an ongoing form of treatment that can require 25 to 40 hours a week. … Continue reading

Sarah Palin’s Hollywood Job Offers

If things don’t work out in the world of politics Sarah Palin can always cash in on the myriad of job offers coming her way from Hollywood. The 44-year-old Republican governor of Alaska turned vice presidential candidate has been the recipient of dozens of recent high profile job offers, including one from Playboy boss Hugh Hefner, who has repeatedly asked the mother of five (and soon-to-be grandmother) to strip naked in the famous men’s magazine. I’m pretty sure the famous hockey mom put that offer on ice… at least for now. Another offer on the table for Palin comes courtesy … Continue reading

Obama Goes Abroad

Obama went abroad today, arriving in Afghanistan which is the first stop on a Middle East and European tour. This marks the first time the presidential hopeful has visited the Middle East during his campaign. The objective of this trip? To shore up his foreign policy objectives. Foreign Policy Foreign policy is Barack Obama’s weak point. At least McCain has fought in wars, and is involved enough in the military to ‘get it’. Or at least that’s what we think according to recent polls. While Obama leads in every other area of the election, he trails McCain on questions of … Continue reading

What are the Do’s and Dont’s of Asking for Links to Your Site?

In my last blog, I talked about leaving comments on blogs in order to get the blog owners to notice you, and consequently link to you. Nowhere in that blog did I tell you to e-mail a bunch of sites and ask them to add you to their blogroll. (A blogroll is a list of blogs that a site will put into their sidebar, and that list of blogs usually corresponds very closely to the topic of that blog, meaning you likely won’t find a blog about politics in the blogroll of a cooking blog, and vice-versa.) E-mailing other blogs … Continue reading

Pop Culture Potporrui: Beckham’s Big Bash and Annie’s Big Project

A Big Bash For The Beckham’s In less than 24 hours the newest members of Hollywood royalty will be welcomed into the inner circle. The official invites were reportedly printed in gold lettering and asked guests to “Please welcome David and Victoria Beckham to Los Angeles.” The invitations also implore guests: “No cameras please.” The big shindig is being held at the Museum of Contemporary Art in downtown Los Angeles. Reported A-listers … Continue reading

Weddings, Babies and Sequels

A LOT has been written and said about Paris Hilton in the past few days. Maybe too much. So let’s say we change topics for a bit (at least until tomorrow) and concentrate on other celebrities who are experiencing happier moments in their lives. For example, cutie Dougray Scott. The Scottish actor who recently played Teri Hatcher’s love interest on “Desperate Housewives” just tied the knot. His new wife is actress Claire Forlani who has a recurring role on “CSI: New York.” According to news reports, the couple wed in a private civil ceremony in Italy earlier today. Forlani’s Italian … Continue reading
