Politics Blog Week in Review July 7-13

The week in review is our way of catching you up on whatever you may have missed in the politics blog during the week. Lots was happening this week as I’m sure will continue to be the case until the general election in November. Monday July 7 The Week in Politics News The previous week, I had been camping with my family on vacation and so we revamped the major news stories from the previous week. Tuesday July 8 Why You Should Vote Some people say it’s a lost cause, others are wondering if this is really the best we … Continue reading

The Iranian Missile Crisis

President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad of Iran is making a statement. In fact, he’s been making statements for quite some time now. Despite repeated warnings from other countries, Iran continues to develop its nuclear program and test fired missiles that have the capability of reaching Israel, among other Middle Eastern states. Why Is Iran So Dangerous? My disclaimer to this is that I don’t have the time or space to explore all the issues in the Middle East. Frankly, we could write books and books and still probably not cover all the bases. However, the BIG issue that everyone is talking about … Continue reading

Cease or Fire?

After the agonizing weeks of the war in Gaza, a ceasefire has been declared. There is an expression here that whenever there is a ceasefire, it means the Israelis cease and the enemies fire, which is exactly what happened; less than 24 hours after the so-called ceasefire was declared, Hamas fired on Ashkelon. Thank G-d, no one was injured. Israel is not exactly the most popular country in the world right now. But most of the world does agree that terrorism is intolerable. On the one hand, the world wept over the tragedy of Mumbai, London and 9-11, but on … Continue reading

Politicians and the Media Coverage Game

Obama is in Iraq. McCain is at the Yankees game. Obama is talking to world leaders. McCain is having a party for his good buddy Mitt Romney. This is the media coverage of McCain over the past few days. Now all of the sudden, McCain’s campaign is claiming that Obama is the media darling. (But of course McCain didn’t say that because McCain and Obama never do the dirty work. Their aids said that.) McCain says that Obama being in Iraq right now does nothing to distract the media from his campaign. (I wonder what planet he’s on?) McCain’s Diabolical … Continue reading

Obama Goes Abroad

Obama went abroad today, arriving in Afghanistan which is the first stop on a Middle East and European tour. This marks the first time the presidential hopeful has visited the Middle East during his campaign. The objective of this trip? To shore up his foreign policy objectives. Foreign Policy Foreign policy is Barack Obama’s weak point. At least McCain has fought in wars, and is involved enough in the military to ‘get it’. Or at least that’s what we think according to recent polls. While Obama leads in every other area of the election, he trails McCain on questions of … Continue reading

Hey New Yorker: A Picture Is Worth a Thousand Words

If you have no idea what my title means then dare I say you have not been paying close enough attention. This week, The New Yorker published a cover cartoon that depicted Obama in Muslim garb and Michelle with a machine gun. Yes–it really did. I have to be honest and say that I can’t quite wrap my brain around that editorial decision. A Picture Really Is Worth a Thousand Words Imagery is far more valuable in communicating a message than what you actually say thus the expression, a picture is worth a thousand words. It’s why propaganda always has … Continue reading

Obama and the Economy

Obama on the Economy We’ve been talking in the politics blog about Phil Gramm and his comment that America is simply a bunch of whiners. We took a look at how McCain distanced himself from his long time pal. For Obama, Gramm’s comments have given him opportunity to talk tough on the economy and talk about what he’ll do differently then his opponent. There is Little Doubt We Are in a Recession Obama says that despite the fact that we are seeing slowed growth as opposed to negative numbers (those negative numbers being the technical definition of a recession), there’s … Continue reading

McCain Talks About the Economy

Yesterday I shared some thoughts on Gramm’s statements that we are a nation of whiners. Both candidates were quick to back away from his statements and quick to paint themselves as empathetic towards our economic plight. Frankly, the candidate who addresses the American people with plan to help people spend within their means (in addition to some short and long term plans), gets my vote. Unfortunately, that doesn’t describe McCain or Obama. McCain was quick to distance himself from Gramm’s comments saying that he “strongly disagrees” with Gramm’s remarks. He apparently has a plan. Plan at the Pump Some distinctive … Continue reading
