Obama Opts Out of Public Financing: Was It a Good Move?

Obama’s whole platform is that it’s time for change. He says he’s going to do business differently, and consequently, he’s made the historically unprecedented decision to opt out of using public financing. Earlier in the campaign, he said that he would use the public funds if his opponent did. But now he’s changed his mind. To some, changing gears signals a red flag of a candidate that went back on his word. To others, it signals that Barack Obama, above all, is committed to doing what he thinks is right. So what do you think–political ploy or serious commitment to … Continue reading

Obama and McCain on the Economy

Polls show that the number one factor on Americans minds right now is the economy. Inflation is outpacing the national average for our pay raises. Unemployment is up, families are losing their homes, and more importantly, consumer confidence is down. The number one question we’re asking right now according to many polls, is what will the new president do to fix the economy. Yes, the economy is on our minds ever more so than bringing our troops home. Given that, I thought it appropriate to look at both McCain’s and Obama’s discussion of economics and how we’re going to ameliorate … Continue reading

Huckabee Joins Fox and Cusack Joins Team Obama

If you can’t beat ‘em join ‘em. That could be Mike Huckabee’s new mantra. The former Republican presidential hopeful plans to join the profession that he infamously slammed while serving as governor of Arkansas. Huckabee announced that he has accepted a new job at Fox News Channel as a political commentator. The ordained Baptist preacher turned politico will reportedly aid Fox as it navigates through the muddy waters of the 2008 presidential elections. The former governor dropped out of the presidential race in March, after John McCain won enough delegates to clinch the Republican nomination. “I hope to bring the … Continue reading

Politics 101: Barack Obama on Education

Education is a big concern in this election, in part I believe because so many feel that the No Child Left Behind Act was at best, inadequate. So what exactly does Barack Obama, if elected President plan to do about it? Zero to Five Plan: Under Obama’s early plan, parents and their young children would be supported. Something that’s interestingly different is that the plan starts at. . .zero. Infant education, Obama feels, is a critical element to help prepare children for kindergarten. His idea is to promote federally funded grants that would enable state agencies to implement their own … Continue reading

Politics 101: Barack Obama on Labor and Housing

Right now, we are just trying to get to know our candidates better. Sherry and I have been talking about what motivates people to vote the way they do. No doubt this is a historic election on a number of fronts. With that said, I hope that voters will really take the time to research candidates’ proposals on how to fix the economy, on education and other issues that face our nation at this time. These next four years will be a cross roads for our nation. Labor–Obama has worked on the Exercise Freedom of Choice Act which will give … Continue reading

Politics 101: More on Barack Obama

We had diverged there a little bit to talk about the important Pennsylvania primary. However, now that it’s over, there’s a winner and there was no clear sense of who will win the Democratic nomination, we can move on to continue our discussion of Barack Obama and his running platforms. Creating More Jobs–Obama believes in increasing federal spending on research, education and training so that we can create high paying and secure jobs. Investing in U.S. Manufacturing–Obama believes in investing in U.S. manufacturing to help American companies gain the skills they need and be able to further the research on … Continue reading

Politics 101–Primaries

I have been covering the various candidates’ running platforms, but yesterday was the Pennsylvania primary and so I thought it would be more appropriate today to focus on what the purpose of a primary election is, why yesterday’s win was important, and what this means for the Democratic party. (McCain is said to have secured the Republican nomination on Feb. 28th.) I will return to discussing the Obama running platform tomorrow. What Exactly Is a Primary? A primary is essentially one means by which a party elects its candidate. Each state controls their own primaries and generally, when you register … Continue reading

Politics 101: Focus on Barack Obama

We are continuing today with our focus on Barack Obama and his major running platforms. I feel like I would be remiss if I didn’t point something out that I find very interesting about his campaign. He takes suggestions. Yep, you read that right. Barack Obama takes suggestions. If you go to his website, in numerous places you’ll see a links that say things like, “Let Your Voice Be Heard” or “Present your ideas.” I am sure some would argue that these are actually fielded by junior campaign staffers and/or that he never reads them, etc. I am not venturing … Continue reading

Politics 101: Focus on US State Senator, Barack Obama

Born of an American mother and a Kenyan father, Barack Obama has definitely led an international life of sorts. He grew up in Hawaii, lived in Indonesia for a period of time (with his mother) graduated from Columbia University, then Harvard University in 1991. When he won a seat as a democratic senator from Illionois in 2004, he was only the 3rd African American to do so since Reconstruction. His background is extensively rooted in civil rights. After graduating from Harvard, he went to work as a civil rights lawyer, and as a senator he helped push through earned income … Continue reading

Politics 101: Introduction and My Goal

“Okay kids, who can tell me whose running for President?” I asked my study group at the inner city tutoring center where I volunteer. “Someone named GOP!” “No, you’re dumb. . .it’s some black guy. We’re going to vote for him because he’s black.” The comments went on for another 5 minutes as to why you should vote for a woman instead of an African American or whether or not the old guy named “GOP” was an animal rights activist because one of the kids keeps seeing his picture with an elephant next to it. If these were little kids, … Continue reading
